International LLM Applicants
In today’s global environment, an increasing number of lawyers from around the world are finding that the LLM (Master of Laws degree) is useful for career advancement and international credibility. LLM programs are offered by many law schools in both the United States and Canada. Many LLM programs provide a broad curriculum in American law, the US (or Canadian) legal system, international law, and comparative law. It is important to check the websites of the individual law schools offering LLM programs for details and requirements.
The Law School Admission Test (LSAT) is not required for admission to LLM programs in the US. A first degree in law from the country of origin is required for admission to LLM programs. The eligibility of international LLM-degree graduates to sit for bar examinations is limited in many US states.
The LLM Credential Assembly Service is offered by LSAC to simplify the application process for eligible graduates of universities or law schools outside of the United States who wish to obtain an LLM degree from a participating American Bar Association-approved law school. The admission documents that schools require may vary, but most US schools will ask for transcripts, TOEFL scores, and other relevant, official documents, all of which must be authenticated. The LLM Credential Assembly Service provides an efficient and convenient way to apply to multiple programs. International applicants obtain and submit official school documents only once to LSAC for analysis and authentication; the authenticated documents are forwarded to all participating law schools to which the applicant applies.
